The exercising horse's body, whether in pleasure or high-intensity sport, is subject to such stresses that inflammation will occur in the body tissues.  To minimise tissue damage, assist in rapid tissue repair, and hence, maintain a healthy, working horse, tissue inflammation needs to be controlled.

Research has shown that Omega-3 fatty acids (ALA) have significant roles in decreasing tissue inflammation in the body, in the immune system, and in the reproductive system. They are, however,  "essential fatty acids" which means they must be fed in the diet. Benefits of Omega 3 FA's include:

  • reduction in body inflammation
  • minimise tissue damage
  • reproductive system support
  • improve & support horses with chronic airway disease

The most important Omega-3 FA's  are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The horse’s body can convert ALA to EPA and DHA.

Fish oil is the best direct source of EPA and DHA. Linseed oil, on the other hand, yields ALA, which then must be converted to EPA and DHA.

Omega-6 FA have their own roles however are shown to be pro-inflammatory and therefore NOT as desirable. They are found in grain oils such as corn and sunflower oil. The ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 FA is essential with Omega-3 needing to be much higher.

Our unique blend of pure marine Omega 3 oil & Flax seed oil is infused with the medicinal properties of the Calendula flower. Calendula contains compounds called "Mucilages". These are "sticky" compounds that adhere strongly to the mucosa ("mucosa" is the lining of the stomach and other organs).

By these actions, the Calendula mucilages offer:

  • a protective role to the mucosa
  •  provide a barrier against stomach acids
  •  decrease inflammation in the tissue layers
  • provides powerful healing properties to damaged or ulcerated tissues.

All these actions of mucilages are well-researched and documented by numerous scientific studies. See our photos of an equine stomach gastroscope showing the oil coating all surfaces of the stomach wall. See our reference section for more information.

  • With cold water fish being the best source of the Omega-3 fatty acids EPA & DHA, we need to supplement the horse's diet to obtain these FA. Fish manufacture these FA from algae. Flaxseed (linseed) oil is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acid: ALA.

Calendula is a medicinal flower with research-proven properties of being antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal, and assists with wound healing.

HoneyPro Omega-3 Horse Oil is a powerful combination of fish and flax seed oils in which the medicinal properties of Calendula have been extracted. This process occurs over many weeks of careful management, before final filtering and bottling.

Directions: Feed 10 - 30 ml in feed. May be fed from 3 - 7 x per week depending on the individual horse. Start low and increase slowly. You will be surprised how little of this oil you will use to see skin and coat changes.

Oil can supplement the fat portion of the diet; be aware that fat can provide 2-3 x the calories of equal weight of oats. Fat is a very good fuel source for the horse, especially endurance horses.

Horses with metabolic disease may receive oil in low amounts as long as the total dietary fat content is considered. If unsure, seek, vet advice.
